DIY Harry Potter Christmas Tree

Winter Craft: Harry Potter Christmas Tree!

Hello everyone and Happy Holidays! This year for Christmas my close family and I wanted to focus less on gifts and more on spending time together. What better way to spend time together than have a family party? And what better kind of family party than a Harry Potter Christmas themed one? With that said, one of the first steps for our party is decorating our Christmas tree. Down below I show all the different ornaments I made for our tree, the materials needed and instructions on how to make them yourself. Please enjoy!

Here is a video showing all of the ornaments on our tree:

Our Christmas Tree

For the top of the tree - We choose to use a witch hat for the top of the tree because Halloween items were on sale for super cheap and it looked cute!

First Ornament - Hogwarts Houses

List of Materials:

-Clear Baubles (I found these in a pack of two at the Dollar Tree)

-Shredded Paper in Green, Blue, Red, Yellow, Gold and Silver

-Printouts of the House Crests

-Glue Stick

-Scissors

Instructions:

For these ornaments, you're going to want to prep the label ahead of time. Find an image of all the Hogwarts Houses (I used this link - http://beautiful-channel.blogspot.com/2011/08/houses-of-hogwarts-school-of-witchcraft.html) and print them out on paper. Cut them out and then glue them onto the outside of the ornament. Then, pop off the top of the ornament and fill each one with colored shredded paper that correlates with the house.

Second Ornament - Prophecy

List of Materials:

-Large Clear Bauble

-Spray Glue

-Silver Glitter

-White Tissue Paper (1 piece)

-Silver Ribbon

-Construction Paper

-Red and Blue Skinny Marker

-Scissors

-Hole Puncher

-Ruler

Instructions:

Prep the tag by cutting out a rectangle piece of paper using a ruler and scissors and cut the sides of one end to create a triangular shape. Then, draw a straight line and write "Prophecy" as well as a set of numbers at the bottom. Moving onto the bauble, open it and spray some glue inside. Pour in glitter and then shake to distribute evenly. Then, rip small pieces of the tissue paper and roll into balls, placing each piece inside the bauble to create a cloudy effect. To finish off the ornament, punch a hole in the top of the tag and string it on with a ribbon.

Third Ornament - Flying Keys

List of Materials:

-Old looking keys (I found mine in the dollar section of Micheal's)

-Toy Butterflies (I found a pack of 3 at the Dollar Store)

-Hot Glue

Instructions:

Remove the wings from the toy butterfly and glue them onto the back of the key.

Fourth Ornament - Cinnamon Cut Outs

List of Materials:

-Cookie Cutters (Amazon is a great place to look for a good deal)

-Cinnamon Dough Recipe. I followed this post - http://www.completelydelicious.com/homemade-cinnamon-ornaments/

-Skewer

-Twine

-Paint (I used black, copper, light brown and gold)

-Spray Glue

-Glitter (I used white, red and gold)

Instructions:

Make the cinnamon dough and cut out the different shapes using a cookie cutter. You can follow the recipe from the link I provided, or any other recipe you have or find. Poke a hole in the top of the shapes. Once hardened in a 200 F degree oven for 2 hours, string them with twine. Paint each ornament and once dry spray on some glue and sprinkle glitter.

Fifth Ornament - Snitch

List of Materials:

-Gold Glitter Baubles

-White Feathers

-Hot Glue

Instructions:

These are very simple in that you bend the end of each feather and hot glue them onto each side of the ornament. You got yourself a snitch!

Sixth Ornament - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

List of Materials:

-Gold Baubles

-Black Paint

-Thin Paint Brush

Instructions:

I just free handed the design of these baubles. A good tip is to use some water on a cotton bud to erase mistakes as you work.

Seventh Ornament - Potions

List of Materials:

-Glass or Plastic Vials (I got mine at Micheal's in the dollar section)

-Beads

-Jewelry Pliers

-Sewing Needle (you'll need a thicker one to be able to pierce through the cork)

-Jewelry Wire

-Hot Glue

-Water

-Food Coloring

-Glitter

-Tag Printable (I got mine from here - http://www.piecesbypolly.com/2013/01/harry-potter-potions-ornament.html)

Instructions:

Please check out this blog post here - http://www.piecesbypolly.com/2013/01/harry-potter-potions-ornament.html

I used this post to figure out how to make these ornaments. First, poke a hole through the vial's cork to allow the jewelry wire to poke through. Then, secure the wire to the base of the cork using the pliers. Fill each vial with either water or colored beads. You can add food coloring and glitter to the vials filled with water. Secure the corks in place with hot glue and finish them off by gluing on the labels.

There are my seven different Harry Potter ornaments to complete our Harry Potter Christmas Tree!

Thank you so much for reading. Let me know in the comments how you liked this post or if you decide to try and make any of these ornaments.

I will be writing a series of posts leading up to our Christmas party which will include decorations, food, treat bags, games, prizes and more! So stay tuned for that.

Happy Holidays!:)
